Premier League
In a reverse of the opening
fixtures of the season, four of the Premier League’s bottom five teams are
playing against each other. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has his first league game in
charge of Cardiff against drop rivals West Ham, while an improving Fulham team
host bottom of the table Sunderland. Manchester United look to avenge last week’s
FA Cup defeat to Swansea, title-chasing Man City and Arsenal have what you’d
expect to be routine games, away to Newcastle and Aston Villa respectively.
Hull vs. Chelsea
Terry |
When Hull thrashed Fulham before
New Year, they recorded their sixth clean sheet at the KC. The Tigers can prove
difficult to score against when playing at home, although they have hosted only
one of the top six teams so far, each of whom they lost to away. A test is in
store as Mourinho’s men come to town, hoping to avoid the same treatment as Hull’s
last visitors from West London. This time a month ago we were pinpointing
Chelsea’s defensive problems, but now they have only conceded one goal in five.
Cahill and Terry look a much more settled centre-back pairing, and with the
attacking quality Chelsea have, they should be able to break Hull’s resistance.
0-1.
Cardiff vs. West Ham
Solskjaer |
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer prepares for
his first league game in charge of Cardiff, and the timing has worked in favour
of the Norwegian, who won three trophies in two full seasons with Molde. After
an impressive FA Cup win at Newcastle, he now faces a West Ham side crippled by
injuries. Being without centre-backs Winston Reid, James Tomkins and James
Collins, they shipped twenty-two goals in their last six matches. Particularly
in their cup games at Nottingham Forest and Man City, Allardyce’s team shown no
willingness to fight for the cause, and they failed to do the basics of
defending. These are very worrying times for West Ham. 2-0.
Everton vs. Norwich
Oviedo |
Just when it looked like Nikica
Jelavic’s Toffees career had gone, he popped up with two goals against QPR,
ironically the team looking to sign him. Everton have only lost once since the
beginning of October, and with a late equalizer, they were rewarded somewhat for
a good performance at Stoke. Leighton Baines scored after recently returning
from injury, which will create competition on the left with Bryan Oviedo, who
impressed in his absence. Norwich are only three points from the relegation
zone, though they will be comforted by the fact that four of the bottom five
are playing against each other this weekend. Picking up a result at Goodison
Park would be a bonus, rather than a necessity, for the Canaries. 2-1.
Fulham vs. Sunderland
Berbatov |
Fulham are showing clear signs of
improvement under Meulensteen, as they deservedly beat West Ham on New Year’s
Day. Berbatov played, and scored, despite rumours he might leave, so it seems the
Rene revival is very much on track. Sunderland beat Manchester United in the
Capital One Cup in midweek. The Black Cats have been fantastic in the cup,
having seen off Southampton and Chelsea beforehand, yet they cannot convert
those performances into the league. They have only taken four points from ten
games against teams in the bottom half this season, yet ten points against
those in the top half! Sunderland clearly have a problem when playing the sides
around them. 2-1.
Southampton vs. West Brom
Downing |
After a 4-3 thriller against Burnley
in the FA Cup, Southampton turn their attentions to the Premier League, where
they have won just one of their last nine. The biggest reason for this poor run
of form is perhaps the goalkeeping issue. Young Spaniard Paulo Gazzaniga, and
English veteran Kelvin Davis, have both looked vulnerable when standing in for Artur
Boruc, a long-term absentee. Keith Downing will have one more match in charge
of West Brom, before new manager Pepe Mel takes the reigns. Downing has done a
respectable job in the short time he has had, under him West Brom have not been
beaten in the league, and that takes some pressure off Mel when he does come
in. 2-2.
Tottenham vs. Crystal Palace
Adebayor |
Tottenham went out of the FA Cup
to Arsenal. Although it is rare for a defeat in a derby to be a good thing, a
few more extra games in a cup run might have been a hindrance. Spurs are
already competing in the Europa League in the second half of this season, and
could well be fighting for a Champions League spot. They are now just two
points behind fourth place Liverpool, and will hope to put more pressure on the
sides above them when they play Crystal Palace. But the Eagles are in need of
points themselves - just one off safety. They have done well since Tony Pulis
came in, but with the lack of proven Premier League quality in their squad,
results could start to slip once Pulis’s ‘honeymoon period’ finishes. 2-0.
Man Utd vs. Swansea
Moyes |
Manchester United have lost all
three of their matches since the turn of the year, they are seventh in the
table, and have lost four home games in the last five weeks. Things surely
cannot get much worse for David Moyes, who must be having sleepless nights at
the moment. Swansea’s previous win came in this same fixture last week, an FA
Cup victory, which ended a run of seven games without a win in all forms.
Wilfried Bony got the winner for the Swans in that one, and has now scored
three goals in his last two appearances. This is a vital game for the Red
Devils. 2-1.
Newcastle vs. Man City
Debuchy |
Having been one of the Premier
League’s form teams when they beat Stoke 5-1, Newcastle have now lost three on
the bounce. They could have a number of absentees for this match, with Debuchy
suspended, Coloccini injured, while Krul and Cabaye missed the match against
Cardiff due to fitness problems. If there is an ‘ideal time’ to play Manchester
City, this is not it. They come into this game having annihilated West Ham 6-0
in the cup midweek, with a hat-trick and brace from Negredo and Dzeko
respectively. In a similar way to their thrashing of Norwich back in November,
the Citizens did not necessarily need to put in a ‘world-class’ performance to get that kind of scoreline. They
simply punished West Ham for their errors and were ruthless in front of goal. Pellegrini
might have fielded a full strength side, but they had so much possession that
fatigue is unlikely to be an issue, plus confidence is sky-high. 0-3.
Stoke vs. Liverpool
Britannia Stadium |
Stoke have only lost one match at
home this season - that was back in September. They do not give much away at the
Britannia, and defended well against Everton, as only a stupid challenge in the
box from Pennant cost them at the end. Liverpool have conceded more than twice
as many goals away from home, seventeen, as the Potters have conceded on their
own turf, seven. The Reds have only won one of their last six on the road,
losing four of them, though each of those games were against top half
opposition. Luis Suarez is the one man carrying Liverpool at the moment, and
the way Stoke are organized at home, his magic alone might not be enough. 1-1.
Aston Villa vs. Arsenal
Giroud |
Paul Lambert will not be flavour
of the month amongst Villa fans. Some controversial comments on the FA Cup, was
followed up by a defeat to League One Sheffield United. The Scot now has to
prepare his side for a few tough matches. They face two difficult trips to
Merseyside in the next few weeks, which is of concern, seeing as they so rarely
win their home games. That statement is unlikely to change after they have
played league leaders Arsenal, who won their last four after victory in the
North London derby. The Gunners have dealt with their injury problems well over
a busy fixture period. Thankfully for Arsene Wenger, Olivier Giroud should
return to fitness at a time when Walcott and Bendtner have picked up
significant injuries. To cause an upset, it often helps if the home team create
an ardent, supportive atmosphere. That is not going to be the case at Villa Park.
0-2.
The Championship
The Championship’s biggest game of
the weekend is on Friday night. Two promotion contenders, Leicester and Derby,
do battle in the fourth East Midlands clash of the season. QPR have a difficult
away game against an Ipswich side unbeaten in nine, while Burnley will be
expected to beat lowly Yeovil. At the bottom, the big game is Charlton unbeaten
in four against a Barnsley side who have already lost eight away games. Ian
Holloway is back in football management business, he has his first match in
charge of Millwall away to Huddersfield.
Leicester vs. Derby
Bryson |
If this match was played just a
few weeks ago, Derby would be the fancied team, yet momentum has swung since
the turn of the year. Leicester are now top of the league after four straight
wins, and with a five point gap between themselves and third place, they are
favourites for promotion. Derby’s seemingly unstoppable form up until January
has been halted, as they have lost back-to-back games, albeit the second was against
Chelsea. It takes away some of the impetus they had gained, and the home loss
to Wigan on New Year’s Day provides a first major setback for Steve McClaren.
Leicester seem to thrive against the bigger teams in the division, so they
might just come out on top. 2-1.
Sheff Wed vs. Leeds
Kebe |
Sheffield Wednesday are outside
the relegation zone for the first time since August. It was easy to criticize
caretaker manager Stuart Gray for the lack of attacking intent, but the Owls
have been defensively sound under him. They have conceded just five goals in his
seven games, and his side allowed Blackpool no shots on target on New Year’s
Day. While Wednesday are improving hugely, Leeds have lost their last three.
They went down 2-0 to League Two Rochdale in the FA Cup, and the Whites have
not won since mid-December. While it would normally be harsh to call one goal
in five a ‘goal drought’ for a forward,
Leeds are basing their play-off bid squarely on the form of Ross McCormack. Brian
McDermott has loaned in wingers Cameron Stewart and Jimmy Kebe, to try to add
some width to their play. However, this could be another clean sheet for the
Wednesday. 1-0.
Blackburn vs. Doncaster
Meite |
Blackburn have had a couple of
positive results. They won away to Leeds on New Year’s Day, and came from
behind to take a draw against Premier League title contenders Manchester City,
in the FA Cup. A lot of Blackburn’s young players, who had been at times carried
by Jordan Rhodes’s goals this season, stepped up and competed against a top
team. Doncaster have done some potentially important business in the transfer
window this week, bringing in defender Abdoulaye Meite on a free. The team is
clearly in need of some experience in defence, as Dickov’s side have shipped
seventeen goals in their last seven games. Young Luke McCullough has struggled
at centre-back since joining in the summer, whereas Meite has played in the
Premier League, making him a good addition. However, form does not favour the
Rovers, who have lost six of their last seven. 2-1.
Blackpool vs. Middlesbrough
Ince |
Blackpool are currently above
Middlesbrough, but that might not last long, considering the contrast in form.
Blackpool seem to be playing with no confidence at the moment, having lost
seven of their last eight, and they failed to hit the target in their last
match. Middlesbrough meanwhile, have won three of their last four league games,
although they could not force an upset against Premier League Hull in the FA
Cup. Karanka played a lot of fringe players in that match though. He fielded
second choice forwards Curtis Main and Luke Williams, as well as a backup
goalkeeper, which suggests enhancing Middlesbrough’s league form is his main priority.
They can definitely do that at Bloomfield Road. 0-2.
